Review: Skinfood Sweet Potato Hydra Liquid SPF 20 PA+

I have another review I meant to write awhile ago, but I totally forgot that I had this. I got this in shade #23, which I believe is the darker version.. they have shade #13, and #21. The one I have is equiv to NC25-30 I think. Skinfood is a brand from Korea but they seem to be pretty popular in Asian countries. I haven't seen a stand alone store in the US but I have seen some of their products in Korean supermarket kiosks.

It's a pretty big bottle with 45ml/1.5oz of product.

Easy to control pump dispenser, and you can do the twist cap thing if you don't want to use the pump.

The shade is very peach toned, and very yellow. It doesn't match my skin 100% but it's blends in after a few minutes and looks fine. The peach tone really warms up the face although it doesn't brighten the skin tone... which is unfortunate because it would be so much better. It just looks matte, but very natural.

Natural Lighting

Sunlight

The foundation has medium coverage and sits on the skin pretty comfortably. I didn't feel it was heavy or anything. The scent of this foundation is pretty strong and reminds me of Asian hair conditioners. It's sweet smelling with floral accents. The smell doesn't bother me, but it is unusually stronger than most foundations I've tried.

Pros
1. Lots of product! 45ml/1.5oz of foundation in a dispensable pump
2. Glass bottle for aesthetics
3. Matte finish
4. Infused with sweet potato, with the belief that topical effects of food is better for skin
5. Very natural finish

Cons
1. Shade selection is limited
2. Scent is strong
3. Hard to find in the US but easier to buy online

This is how it looks like blended.

I really like this foundation but I don't think I'd repurchase simply because I'll probably never use this up! =p While this foundation has nice coverage, it makes my skin look flat and boring. By that, I mean that it doesn't have that dewiness that most Asian foundations have. Their bb creams are much better and makes my skin look more radiant. I also think this foundation is a bit too orangey on me... not that it doesn't match eventually, but it's not something I'd use in the winter when I'm a few shades lighter. Right now it's nice for summer with a bright shimmery highlight.

This product is bought by yours truly :) Runs for around $15-20 on eBay and various sellers online.

Have you tried anything from Skinfood? Thoughts? :)

Thanks for the review! I've always wondered about Skin Food's foundations.

This seems like a nice product- the shade suits you well~

I have tried SkinFood's Mushroom BB cream and Aloe BB cream. The Aloe one had a pink undertone which didn't suit me, and the Mushroom one was kinda thick.

I haven't tried SkinFood pdts yet coz they are usually quite expensive when bought in stores here. Thanks for this review! :D

My experience with skinfood so far is a bit of hit and miss...I quite like the mushroom bb cream from skinfood, The finish is amazing for the first 3 hours..then it turns my face into an oil slick..:-P I do like the concept though as I love food :-)
BTW you complexion is flawless.

It looks pretty good on your skin :O But your skin is already so flawless *jealous*
I have samples from skin food~!! I've never used them though, coz i always forget to go get containers to hold the left over >_<" I love the little displays they have in Asian stores here in NZ for Skinfood though!!

Oh, wow, your skin looks amazing! Usually natural sunlight is quite harsh in photos, but your face just looks perfect. Not quite sure what you meant by flat and boring, though?

I used to love the Skinfood sheet masks when I was still living in Asia and had easy access to it. My bestie also uses some of their cream masks and swears by it!

I love skinfood! But I only tried their skin care stuff, I've been wanting to try their BB creams though. Currently on an ebay hunt for this :P

Hmmm! I just ordered a bunch of skincare products from Skinfood off of ebay, but I've never thought about their foundations...Matte sounds good for oily skin though. Still, I personally like dewy finishes too. xD

Mmm I love sweet potatoes. I wouldn't mind some on my face ;P

Sounds like a really nice product to try and it looks great on your skin. Sadly though, I'm allergic to Skinfood products. :(

i do like skinfood products. would have to say that their packaging is cute! :3 you're lucky to have found a shade that matches your skintone. considering that they're shades are very limited haha! :D

I have been seeing so many reviews about Skinfood! Is this the only product of their you own or do you have more? I hear they have a salmon concealer I have been considering.

Thanks for the review, this product sounds great and looks so nice on your skin. But yeah, I would see why you would want a dewy look too. :) I had their Peach Sake toner, omg, it smelled amazing haha.

Forgive me for not being well versed in the Asian cosmetics industry, I only know Sheseido as I am Asian... This is also the Asian girl who doesn't know how to use Chopstix! Anyways, the foundation looks amazing on your skin but I can understand that a strong smell can deter you from wearing it. I recently came across Smashbox Studio Skin this is a great foundation, 15 hours lightweight and you can layer it on for more coverage and it has SPF. They have lots of shades so you should be able to find something suitable.

I am pretty keen to try skin food! though I don't know about the scent, I usually prefer my foundations/tinted moisturisers without scent but the product looks great tho :)

I was looking through the pictures first and got a little excited that it looks yellow-ish haha! it's so hard to find foundations with a nice golden tone. I am wondering if this foundation would be good for those who have oily skin. i too do not like foundations that gives a matte look. too mattified of a look makes me look like i have a mask on even if the foundation matches my neck :p. my face do get oily at times but i don't really mind it as long as my foundation stays put lol!

I've never tried anything from SkinFood, but Askmewhats does reviews on a lot of their products. It looks really great on on your face and it matches perfectly.

I would probably like this because I love foundations with matte finishes.

Oh, by the way, the blush I'm wearing in my recent post is NYX cream blush in Glow :)

Thanks for this review! I've always been curious about skinfood products and this one seems to be an ok choice since I'm NC20 too. Looks great on you~ :]

Heyy sweetie! Thanks for the lovely comment. I get you when you said flat and boring. But i have to tell you how pretty the finish is if you're living in a humid place like where I'm at. That kind of matte will be radiant and dewy in a matter of secs i tell ya! :) Thanks for sharing photos.

I wouldn't mind trying this foundation out. Although they have limited shades, they match me better than BB creams. Korean BB creams usually have a grey cast.

sweet potato! YUM! haha Interesting product that includes sweet potato! looks like the coverage is very natural! and i love how it has spf of 20! i'm on the hunt for spf for the face that feels light and doesn't leave a whitecast on my face :( so difficult!

If anyone is looking to buy SkinFood in Canada or USA, you can buy it from www.momomango.com

I personally really like the peach sake bbcream and think it works much better than the foundations.

This BB cream? Hydra Liquid? hahaha makes your skin looks SO smooth!! Woahhh & it looks so soft and nice and creamy! I've never really been into Skinfood because I'm a packaging freak and Skinfood's packaging is a bit boring but now that I know this product works really well, I think I will be looking into this brand now! Thank you for the review! (:

Thank you so much for the review! This sounds like a really interesting bb cream - I'm going to add it onto my list of bb creams to try. The coverage looks like it is a lot better than most bb creams, which are usually pretty sheer. I actually don't mind the matte finish too much either.

You know, I've always wondered why BB cream shades are numbered the way they are. The Skinfood colors are the similar to the ones that Missha offers 13, 21, 23, and 31. I wonder what happened to all the shades in between all those numbers? :P

Thanks so much for reviewing this! Do you recommend this for those with oily/combination skin? like me? I think I'd like it matte so my face won't look too dewey/oily when I put it on..

I have never tried Skin Food yet. Would love to though. I always thought their packaging is so cute. :) Your skin looks amazing in the pictures you provided using the foundation. I'm pretty sure even without the foundation, your skin already is amazing to begin with. :)

This is a really cool idea, I have never heard of it before. But I like the idea that it is from food. I will have to look into it about shipping to Europe.

I'm new in the blogging world and would really appreciate if you took the time and checked my blog out. Please tell me if there is something I can do better or change. I would be really grateful.

XO Astrid

It looks so great on you. Have you tried using a highlighter in the foundation? That can add some brightness to the foundation :D

Steph said...

I prefer matter finishes for the face =] definitely have to put this on my list!!! your skin looks so nice in sunlight~

hmmm scent... it sounds heavy, but i'd probably prefer it over north american foundations which is kinda like stinky plastic lol

I love skinfood! Sucks that we don't really have it available here in the states. The only time I ever bought Skinfood was when I went back to the Philippines and when my friend had a layover at the Korea Airport. But, I do love their bb cream (I'm using the the aloe one atm). I'd keep an eye for this one next time. Your skin looks glowing!
